T The decline in oil production caused by decreasing reservoir pressure and high residual oil saturation after the primary and secondary recovery stages has driven the application of chemical enhanced oil recovery (eor) methods, particularly surfactant flooding, to recover additional oil still trapped within the pores of the reservoir rock. surfactant flooding works through two main mechanisms: reducing the interfacial tension (ift) between the oil and water phases, and altering rock wettability from an oil-wet toward a water-wet condition, allowing oil previously trapped by capillary forces to flow more easily toward the production well. alpha olefin sulfonate (aos) surfactant is widely used in eor applications due to its resistance to high salinity and temperature conditions, yet its performance in reducing ift still has room for improvement through the addition of an environmentally friendly natural co-surfactant. sunkist orange peel extract, which contains limonene as the active ift-reducing agent and pectin as a viscosity-enhancing biopolymer, was selected as the natural additive in this study. this study aims to analyze the effect of adding limonene from orange peel extract as a co-surfactant on the performance of aos surfactant in reducing ift, altering wettability, and increasing the oil recovery factor (rf) through laboratory-scale core flooding tests.the research was conducted by varying the aos concentration from 0.3% to 1.7% as the independent variable, while the orange peel extract concentration was kept constant at 1%. all tests were carried out under conditions of 43°api oil, 12,500 ppm formation water salinity, and 60°c temperature to represent conditions close to actual field reservoirs. the testing stages included synthetic brine preparation, functional group characterization of limonene and orange peel extract using ftir, phase behavior testing to determine the winsor classification at each concentration variation, ift measurement under conditions forming a middle phase, contact angle testing to evaluate wettability alteration, and core flooding testing to measure the total recovery factor at the optimum concentration obtained from the previous stages.phase behavior results showed that of the six aos concentrations tested, only 1.1% successfully formed a middle phase, while the other concentrations consistently formed an upper phase, so 1.1% was selected as the optimum condition for subsequent testing. at this concentration, the addition of orange peel extract reduced the ift value from 2.01 dyne/cm to 1.88 dyne/cm, equivalent to a 6.47% decrease. contact angle testing showed a decrease from 71,47° to 70,23°, indicating that water-wet conditions were maintained and even slightly strengthened after the addition of orange peel extract. core flooding results at 1,1% concentration showed that rf increased from 51,43% at the waterflooding stage to 82,14% after single aos injection, and from 50,71% to 89,29% after aos injection with orange peel extract. this increase represents an additional oil recovery of 7,15 percentage points compared to the aos system without additive, proving that the combination of both materials delivers better performance than the use of aos alone.based on the overall test results, it can be concluded that the addition of limonene from orange peel extract as a co-surfactant improves aos surfactant performance, both in reducing interfacial tension, maintaining favorable wettability conditions, and increasing oil recovery, with an optimum aos concentration of 1,1% under conditions of 12,500 ppm salinity and 60°c temperature.
