B Background: periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that causes damage to the supporting tissues of the teeth. one of the suspected local functional factors that can aggravate periodontitis is occlusal trauma, particularly secondary occlusal trauma that occurs in periodontal tissue that has lost attachment. occlusal interference (premature contact) and articulation interference (blocking) are thought to play a role as risk factors for secondary occlusal trauma. aim: to determine the difference in the proportion of teeth experiencing occlusal and articulation impediments on the likelihood of secondary occlusal trauma in periodontitis patients at rsgm fkg usakti. methods: an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design. the sample consisted of examination sheets of periodontitis patients treated at the periodontics clinic of rsgm fkg usakti from 2015 to 2025. results: secondary occlusal trauma was more frequently observed in patients with occlusal interferences (81.1%) than in those without occlusal interferences (73.1%). however, the chi-square test showed no statistically significant difference in the proportion of secondary occlusal trauma between patients with and without occlusal interferences among periodontitis patients (p = 0.286; or = 1.579; ci = 0.764–3.261). regarding articulating interferences, secondary occlusal trauma was more common in patients without articulating interferences (80%) than in those with articulating interferences (75.8%), and this difference was also not statistically significant (p = 0.839; or = 0.784; ci = 0.275–2.234). conclusion: there was no statistically significant difference in the proportion of occlusal and articulating interferences with respect to the likelihood of secondary occlusal trauma in patients with periodontitis.
