B Background: thermoplastic nylon is an alternative denture base material to acrylic resin because it does not contain residual monomer. however, this material has a relatively high water absorption capacity, which may lead to an increase in surface roughness. sports drinks generally have a low ph, which can increase material porosity and ultimately contribute to increased surface roughness of denture base materials. objective: to evaluate the effect of sports drinks on the surface roughness of thermoplastic nylon denture base materials. methods: thermoplastic nylon denture base specimens consisting of vertex thermosens® and flexible resin acryteon were prepared. baseline surface roughness values were measured prior to immersion. each material was divided into four groups based on the immersion solution: aquadest as the control group, and sports drinks including pocari sweat, you-c1000 orange water, and hydro coco original. before cyclic immersion, all specimens were immersed in aquadest and stored in an incubator at 37 °c for 24 hours. subsequently, the specimens were alternately immersed in the test solution for 5 seconds and in distilled water for 5 seconds for 24 cycles, and then stored in aquadest for 24 hours. the cyclic immersion was repeated for 14 days and surface roughness was measured at 7 and 14 days. results: an increase in polished surface roughness values was observed in all groups with increasing immersion time. statistically significant increases in surface roughness were found in flexible resin acryteon immersed in hydro coco original, vertex thermosens® immersed in you-c1000 orange water, and flexible resin acryteon immersed in pocari sweat. these changes were associated with the acidic environment of the sports drinks, particularly those containing ascorbic acid, citric acid, acetic acid, and malic acid. conclusion: the consumption of sports drinks affects surface roughness of thermoplastic nylon denture base materials over time.
