T The effectiveness of the drilling hydraulic system is one of the key factors influencing the ability to transport drill cuttings from the bottom of the wellbore to the surface, as well as the performance of the drill bit throughout the drilling process. a non-optimal hydraulic system can reduce hole-cleaning efficiency, potentially decreasing the rate of penetration (rop) and increasing the risk of drilling-related problems.this study was conducted on well eca-071 in field \\\"t,\\\" a directional development well located in the offshore southeast sumatra (oses) working area, indonesia. the well was drilled through four hole sections—20 in, 17½ in, 12¼ in, and 8½ in—to produce gas from the gita-a target zone within the talang akar formation.this study aims to evaluate and optimize the drilling hydraulics system in well eca-071 using the bit hydraulic horsepower (bhhp) method. the evaluation was carried out by calculating pressure losses throughout the circulation system, including pressure losses in the surface equipment, drill pipe, annulus, and drill bit, and subsequently comparing the bit pressure loss with the standpipe pressure. the drilling hydraulics system is considered optimal when the percentage of pressure loss across the bit exceeds 50%. if the bit pressure percentage is below 50%, hydraulic optimization is performed by determining the optimum flow rate and total flow area (tfa) nozzle configuration to improve hydraulic energy distribution at the drill bit. the success of the optimization was further evaluated using the cutting carrying index (cci) method to assess the drilling fluid\\\'s ability to transport cuttings to the surface.the evaluation was conducted on three hole sections, namely 17½ in, 12¼ in, and 8½ in. the initial hydraulic analysis showed that the 17½ in section had already achieved optimal hydraulic conditions, with bit pressure percentages of 53.84% within the depth interval of 1,187–2,035 ftmd and 50.77% within the interval of 2,035–3,129 ftmd. in contrast, the 12¼ in and 8½ in sections exhibited hydraulic efficiencies below the recommended threshold of 50%, indicating that hydraulic optimization was require.based on the evaluation results, hydraulic optimization was performed on the 12¼ in and 8½ in hole sections using the bit hydraulic horsepower (bhhp) method, as the initial hydraulic performance was found to be below the optimum criteria. the optimization process was carried out to determine the optimum flow rate and nozzle size in order to improve hydraulic energy distribution at the drill bit. the optimization results showed a significant improvement in hydraulic efficiency in well eca-071. in the 12¼ in section, within the depth interval of 3,149–6,731 ftmd, the hydraulic percentage increased from 9.83%–18.79% to 53.87%–54.00%. meanwhile, in the 8½ in section, the hydraulic percentage increased from 40.71% to 50.66%. these results indicate that the hydraulic energy distribution at the drill bit had reached the optimum condition according to the bhhp criterion, where the bit pressure percentage exceeds 50%.to evaluate the effectiveness of the optimization, a cutting carrying index (cci) analysis was performed using the optimum flow rates obtained from the previous optimization stage. the results showed that the cci values ranged from 4.59 to 23.90 in the 12¼ in section and from 11.37 to 54.73 in the 8½ in section. all cci values were greater than the minimum recommended value of 1, indicating that the hole cleaning process was effective and that the drilling fluid had sufficient carrying capacity to transport cuttings to the surface.overall, the optimization of the drilling hydraulics system using the bit hydraulic horsepower (bhhp) method in well eca-071 successfully improved hydraulic energy distribution at the drill bit and achieved effective hole cleaning performance. therefore, the optimized flow rate and total flow area (tfa) configuration are recommended for implementation in field operations with similar well characteristics to improve drilling efficiency and minimize the risk of drilling-related problems during operations.
