T The actions of the ecuadorian police authorities in forcibly entering the embassy of mexico in quito in april 2024 to arrest jorge glas triggered the severance of diplomatic relations by mexico, thereby giving rise to legal issues concerning the conduct of ecuadorian authorities toward diplomatic premises and the legal consequences of the severance of diplomatic relations under the 1961 vienna convention on diplomatic relations. the problems examined in this research are: (1) whether the entry of ecuadorian police officers into the embassy of mexico in quito, ecuador, may result in the severance of diplomatic relations in accordance with the 1961 vienna convention on diplomatic relations; and (2) what are the legal consequences of the severance of diplomatic relations carried out by mexico against ecuador under the 1961 vienna convention on diplomatic relations. this research employs normative legal research with a descriptive nature, utilizing secondary data obtained through interviews and literature review, analyzed qualitatively with conclusions drawn through deductive reasoning. the findings indicate that ecuador’s actions violated the principle of inviolability of diplomatic premises as stipulated in article 22 of the 1961 vienna convention on diplomatic relations and were also contrary to the theory of extraterritoriality. mexico’s decision to sever diplomatic relations constitutes a lawful response to such a serious violation. although article 45 of the 1961 vienna convention does not regulate the grounds for the severance of diplomatic relations, mexico’s action may be justified as an effort to safeguard national honor and sovereignty in the conduct of foreign relations.
