P PT.
P PT. Big Fashion Garmentama Industries is a manufacturing company engaged in the production of ready-to-wear garments. The company serves both domestic and international markets on a large scale. A recurring issue is the occurrence of defects in the manufactured products. An analysis of the production process revealed that the highest frequency of product failures or defects occurs during the sewing stage. This necessitates rework, which delays production timelines and ultimately hinders the achievement of production targets. The initial step of the Six Sigma program involves defining the problem and establishing the objectives to be attained. The core issue is the presence of product defects originating in the sewing process. Nine types of defects frequently observed on production lines A and B were identified as characteristics for determining the Critical to Quality (CTQ) parameters, as each defect type directly impacts the quality of the final product. The Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) calculation focused on losses incurred from labor costs for rework and wasted materials, amounting to IDR 1,362,386 in February 2004 and IDR 1,373,514 in May 2004. Process capability analysis yielded a $C_p$ value of 0.8832 for line A and 0.8825 for line B. Both values indicate low process capability, necessitating improvement measures through enhanced process performance and more effective control. For lines A and B, a sigma level of 3.73 was achieved. Based on the Pareto chart, the dominant types of defects occurring most frequently in the T-shirt sewing process are loose stitches (skipped or raised stitches), accounting for 27.6% of defects on Line A and 27.7% on Line B. Proposed measures to address these potential failures include revising Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), verifying the suitability of the tools in use, performing maintenance on machinery—particularly older equipment—and providing training for operators. Following the implementation of these measures, there was a reduction in the proportion of defects and an increase in the sigma level to 3.94 for Line A and 3.96 for Line B. This demonstrates that the application of Six Sigma at PT. Big Fashion Garmentama Industries effectively reduces the number of defects occurring during the T-shirt sewing process on both Line A and Line B.
